How to Know God's Voice: 3 Biblical Tests of Fruit, Fulfillment, and Faith (1 Samuel 3:19)

Young Samuel hearing God's voice in the tabernacle with divine light illuminating his path.

"And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and did not let any of his words fall to the ground."
– 1 Samuel 3:19

One of the most important questions believers ask is, "How do I know if God is speaking to me?" In a world filled with countless opinions, distractions, and competing voices, learning to recognize the voice of God is essential for spiritual growth and wise decision-making.

Knowing God's voice is the spiritual process of developing an intimate relationship with the Creator that enables a kingdom citizen to distinguish His divine direction, promptings, and truth from personal thoughts, worldly influences, and external distractions. As our relationship with God deepens, our ability to discern His voice becomes clearer and more consistent.

The life of Samuel provides a powerful example of spiritual discernment. Scripture tells us that Samuel grew in his relationship with God, and the Lord did not allow any of his words to fall to the ground. In other words, the words God gave Samuel consistently manifested and produced results. From Samuel's experience, we can identify several key indicators that help us recognize God's voice.

1. Fruit: God's Voice Produces Good Fruit

The first and most reliable test of God's voice is the fruit it produces. Jesus taught that a tree is known by its fruit. Likewise, a genuine word from God will always result in something constructive, life-giving, and beneficial.

When God spoke through Samuel, those words consistently came to pass. They were not empty statements or wishful thinking. They carried divine authority and produced visible results.

God's voice also aligns with the Fruit of the Spirit. It cultivates love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Even when God corrects or redirects us, His voice ultimately produces growth and transformation rather than confusion and destruction.

When evaluating what you believe you have heard, ask yourself: Does this produce good fruit? Does it reflect God's loving nature and character? If not, it is likely not the voice of God.

2. Fulfillment: God's Voice Brings Completion and Satisfaction

The second test is fulfillment. Scripture teaches that God is not a human being that He should lie. Whatever God speaks carries the certainty of fulfillment. His promises may unfold over time, but they will ultimately come to pass according to His perfect timing.

Beyond external manifestation, God's voice also brings an immediate sense of inner fulfillment. When God truly speaks, there is a deep assurance that settles within the heart. Questions begin to find answers. Fear loses its grip. Anxiety gives way to peace. Doubt is replaced with confidence.

God's presence never leaves us feeling empty or abandoned. Instead, His voice fills us with divine confidence, clarity, and spiritual stability. While circumstances may not change instantly, something within us becomes settled because we know God has spoken.

Ask yourself: Does this message bring God's peace and assurance, or does it create confusion and emptiness? God's voice carries the atmosphere of divine fulfillment.

3. Faith: God's Voice Increases Your Trust in Him

The third test is faith. Scripture declares that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Whenever God speaks, He invites us into a greater level of trust and dependence upon Him.

God's voice often stretches us beyond our comfort zones. It challenges us to believe for what seems impossible. It encourages us to move from fear to courage, from limitation to possibility, and from uncertainty to confidence in God's power.

Every divine instruction is an invitation to grow from faith to faith and from glory to glory. God's voice consistently develops spiritual maturity and strengthens our confidence in His ability to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we ask or think.

If a message does not inspire greater trust in God or strengthen your faith, it may not be originating from Him. God's voice always moves us toward a deeper reliance upon His wisdom, provision, and power.

Conclusion

Learning to recognize God's voice is a lifelong journey of spiritual growth and intimacy with Him. Just as Samuel matured in his relationship with God, believers today can develop greater discernment through prayer, scripture, and spiritual sensitivity.

When seeking to determine whether God is speaking, remember the three biblical tests: Fruit, Fulfillment, and Faith. God's voice produces good fruit, brings divine fulfillment and peace, and increases your faith and confidence in Him.

As you continue growing in your relationship with God, trust that He desires to guide you. The more time you spend in His presence, the more familiar His voice becomes. Like Samuel, you can learn to hear clearly, respond faithfully, and walk confidently in God's direction for your life.

Key Takeaways:

Fruit – God's voice produces life-giving results and reflects His character.

Fulfillment – God's voice brings peace, assurance, and the certainty of His promises.

Faith – God's voice stretches your trust and confidence in His power.

📖 Reflection: Which of the three tests—Fruit, Fulfillment, or Faith—have you most clearly experienced when sensing God's guidance in your life?

💡 Action Step: Spend time in prayer this week and journal any guidance you believe God is giving you. Evaluate it using the tests of Fruit, Fulfillment, and Faith.

The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
