One of the greatest gifts God has given humanity is the gift of choice.    Choice is a divine gift given to every person as God's beloved offspring, created in the image and likeness of God. People have the ability to decide. They have the ability to choose.    Every decision involves a movement away from one possibility and toward another.   How Are You Going to Handle It? "For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily." – Jeremiah 20:8    How are you going to handle it?    Situations arise in life, and individuals must make decisions about how they will live and show up in the world. When God directs a person to take action, and the outcome does not align with expectations, a resolve must be made.    A person may do exactly what God instructed, speak what God directed, and go where God led, yet still experience unexpected outcomes. True commitment is revealed when circumstances do not unfold as anticipated.    Jeremiah discovered this firsthand.   Smashing: When God Is Trying to Get Our Attention    The focus of today's teaching is “Smashing.” While the term “smashing” is sometimes used as slang to describe eating a large amount of food or engaging in intimate relations, that is certainly not the context in which Jeremiah uses the word. "This is what I will do, says the Lord. I will make this place like the city of Topheth, and I will smash the people who live there like this pot." – Jeremiah 19:12    God told Jeremiah to go to the potter's house to learn a lesson and receive a message for the children of Israel. Jeremiah observed the potter and the clay. The clay was on the wheel in the master's hands, being shaped and reshaped until a vessel was formed.    Then God instructed Jeremiah to take that pot and smash it.   I C U – Jeremiah 11:3    "God sees you." These words carry both comfort and accountability. God sees the places where we are faithful, the areas where we struggle, and the choices we make every day. Jeremiah 11:3 reminds us that our relationship with God involves a covenant a sacred agreement that calls us to live according to divine principles. "Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant." – Jeremiah 11:3 God spoke through the prophet Jeremiah to the children of Israel and reminded them that God sees what they are doing. The people had entered into covenant with God, yet their thoughts, words, and actions were not aligned with the covenant they had agreed to keep. The message is still relevant today: God sees you.   Incomparable – Jeremiah 10:6     "No one compares to you, Lord. You are great, and your name is mighty in power." – Jeremiah 10:6     Humanity is made in the image and likeness of God, meaning people are called to reflect the nature and character of God. However, humanity is not the Creator of the universe. There is no comparison between the small god and the great God, between human potency and God's omnipotence, or between human knowledge and God's omniscience.     People can be like God because humanity is made in God's image and likeness, but people cannot compare to God.   It’s a Family Affair – Jeremiah 9:17     "This is what the Lord Almighty says: Consider now, call for the wailing women to come, send for the most skillful of them." – Jeremiah 9:17    Normally, when people say, "It is a family affair," they think of something joyous, celebratory, and happy. However, Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet. When Jeremiah refers to a family affair in this passage, he is describing a situation in which everyone is crying.    The children of Israel were experiencing the consequences of being out of alignment and out of congruence with God. Their thoughts, words, and actions that were not the highest and the best had consequences that reached beyond individuals and impacted the entire family and community.   I Need a Visual – Jeremiah 1:18    Jeremiah 1:18 declares, "Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall." This powerful passage reveals one of the greatest spiritual practices: visioning and visualization. God gives a vision internally, and that vision must eventually become visible externally.    One of the greatest spiritual practices is visioning and visualization. Internally, a person receives a vision. This is not seeing with physical eyes, but seeing with spiritual eyes, as people walk by faith and not by sight. God gives a vision, providing a big picture that a person sees internally before it manifests externally. After receiving a vision internally, a person writes the vision and makes the vision plain.
