Turn on the Light: Discover the Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding Within You
Isaiah 59:9
"It seems like justice is far from us. It appears that righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness. For brightness, but we walk in deep shadows." – Isaiah 59:9
Turn on the light. When life becomes dark, confusing, uncertain, or overwhelming, it can feel as though there is no clear direction. We may look for answers and find more questions. We may search for clarity and encounter confusion. We may look for brightness, only to feel as though we are walking through deep shadows.
Yet there is a powerful spiritual truth to remember: the light is within you. Turn on the light and become aware of the light that is already present within your being.
No matter how dark the situation appears, there is light available. You are connected to the light of God. Jesus declared that He was the light of the world, and as we grow in consciousness, we recognize our calling to allow that divine light to shine through us.
This light represents wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discernment, truth, and spiritual awareness. The familiar symbol of a light bulb turning on represents an idea coming into consciousness. Suddenly, something becomes clear. What was confusing becomes understandable. What was hidden becomes visible.
The light is available. You have to turn it on.
And how do you turn on the light? Through stillness. Through silence. Through meditation. Through prayer. Through spiritual practice. Through Scripture, study, reflection, and a willingness to see what needs to be seen.
1. Turn on the Light So You Can See
Firstly, you do not have to live in darkness and grope around.
The light is available if you are ready to see. Sometimes people remain in darkness not because there is no light, but because they are not yet willing to see what the light reveals.
Light does more than illuminate the path. Light reveals reality. When the light comes on, you can see what is actually in the room. You can see where you are standing. You can see where you need to go. You can also see the things that need to be moved, cleaned, repaired, or addressed.
Scripture declares:
"Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my pathway."
Turn on the light. Go into Scripture. Engage in study. Reflect on the Word. Pray. Meditate. Research. Examine your thoughts. Use your denials and affirmations. Give yourself permission to become conscious of what God is revealing to you.
You do not have to walk around in ignorance. You do not have to continually stumble through situations without understanding. The light of God is available, and spiritual practice helps you become more aware of it.
Think about an ordinary light switch. Someone flips the switch, and the darkness disappears. The room has not necessarily changed. Your awareness has changed because you can now see what was already there.
Sometimes the same thing happens spiritually. A change in consciousness can illuminate a situation that previously seemed impossible to understand.
Turn up your spiritual practices. Turn up your prayer. Turn up your study. Turn up your stillness. Turn on the light.
2. Stop Living in Someone Else's Shadow
Secondly, you do not have to live in the shadows of anyone else.
Many people spend their lives comparing themselves with others. They look at someone else's accomplishments, relationships, possessions, opportunities, personality, ministry, career, or success and conclude that they are somehow living in another person's shadow.
But you are not called to live by someone else's light. You are called to allow your own God-given light to shine.
You do not have to remain in a twilight zone, waiting for somebody else's reflection to illuminate your life. You do not have to wait for someone else to give you permission to shine.
You are capable of becoming conscious of the light within you and allowing that light to bless others.
Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and the light may appear to be flickering. But the answer is not always to panic because the circumstances look dark. Sometimes the answer is simply to turn the light back on.
When you change your mind, you can change your experience. When you change your way of being, you can change the way you respond. When you change your words, you can change the atmosphere. When you change your behavior, you can change the direction of your life.
Sometimes turning on the light begins with one decision.
It may be a decision to stop pretending. A decision to tell the truth. A decision to forgive. A decision to seek help. A decision to pray. A decision to study. A decision to change your thinking. A decision to finally deal with the situation you have been avoiding.
When you are ready to truly see, allow the light from heaven to shine. Let the light reveal the areas that need attention.
Stop groping in darkness. Stop living in the shadows. Stop waiting in the twilight. Turn on the light.
3. Turn on the Light So You Stop Stumbling
Thirdly, when people are in darkness, they are more likely to stumble and fall.
If you fall, there is comfort in knowing that God can pick you up. God's grace is restorative. God's mercy is available. There is always an opportunity to rise again.
However, while it is wonderful to know that God can restore you after a fall, there is also wisdom in learning how to walk in the light so that you can avoid unnecessary stumbling.
Scripture reminds us of God's ability to keep us from falling and to present us in the presence of God's glory. There is a dimension of consciousness where we can learn to walk with greater awareness, wisdom, and discernment.
Light gives you the ability to see the obstacles before you reach them.
Imagine walking through a room filled with furniture in complete darkness. You may stumble over a chair, bump into a table, or fall over something on the floor. But turn on the light, and you can see the obstacles before you.
Life can work the same way. Sometimes we stumble because we refuse to see what is in front of us. We ignore warning signs. We avoid difficult truths. We remain attached to unhealthy patterns. We refuse to acknowledge what needs to change.
The light does not exist to condemn you. The light exists to help you see.
When the light reveals something that needs to change, do not become afraid of what you see. Thank God for the revelation. What you can see, you can address. What you can acknowledge, you can begin to transform.
You do not have to stumble over the same things repeatedly. You can turn on the light.
The Light Reveals What Needs to Be Seen
Sometimes we ask God to change a situation when God is inviting us to see the situation differently.
We may pray for the darkness to disappear, while the answer is to turn on the light.
When the light comes on, you may discover that the answer was closer than you thought. You may discover that the problem was not what you originally believed. You may discover that a relationship needs attention, that your thinking needs renewal, or that a decision requires greater wisdom.
Do not be afraid of the light because of what it reveals.
The light is not your enemy. The light is your helper.
Let the lighthouse shine. A lighthouse does not eliminate the ocean. It helps ships navigate through it. In the same way, spiritual light does not mean that you will never face difficult circumstances. It means that you do not have to navigate those circumstances without awareness, wisdom, and direction.
Turn on the Light Through Spiritual Practice
The light becomes more apparent as you develop your spiritual practice.
Make time for stillness. Make time for silence. Make time for prayer and meditation. Open your Bible. Study the Scriptures. Reflect on what you are reading. Speak affirmations that remind you of your identity in God. Practice denials that release beliefs that no longer serve your highest good.
Spiritual practice is not simply about performing religious activities. It is about becoming conscious of the divine presence within and around you.
Stillness can turn on the light.
Prayer can turn on the light.
Scripture can turn on the light.
Study can turn on the light.
A changed mind can turn on the light.
A changed way of being can turn on the light.
You do not necessarily need a complicated process. Sometimes you simply need to stop, become still, and become willing to see.
You Are the Light of the World
Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world. As followers of Christ, we are also called to let our light shine before others.
This means that your light is not merely for you. Your light gives other people permission to shine.
When you walk in wisdom, you help someone else find wisdom. When you walk in peace, you can create an atmosphere of peace. When you walk in love, you make it easier for someone else to experience love.
You do not diminish your own light by allowing someone else to shine. Light multiplies light.
Therefore, stop comparing. Stop hiding. Stop waiting for someone else's approval. Stop living in the shadows.
Turn on the light.
Conclusion: It Is Time to Turn on the Light
Declare that you are ready to turn on the light and see what needs to be seen.
