I AM Not Crazy: Keeping a Sound Mind in Seasons of Pressure and Unconventional Faith

I AM Not Crazy!

David pretending madness at the gate while remaining mentally focused

"So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard." – 1 Samuel 21:13

“I AM Not Crazy” is a powerful declaration of mental soundness, spiritual resilience, and emotional stability. It is a decree that no matter the pressure, confusion, or intensity of your season, your mind remains anchored in God.

External circumstances may feel chaotic. Your decisions may seem unconventional. Your journey may look unusual to others. Yet none of these things determine your true mental or spiritual condition. God has given you a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

How to Know You Are Still in Your Right Mind

Firstly: It’s Just a Look

Appearances can be deceptive. In this passage, David was running for his life from Saul. Stranded in Gath and surrounded by enemies, he used a strategic survival tactic. He altered his outward appearance by scribbling on doors and allowing saliva to run down his beard so others would perceive him as insane.

To those watching, David looked completely unstable. Yet internally, he remained sharp, intentional, and focused on survival.

In the same way, there are seasons when your obedience to God may look strange to others. Starting over, leaving comfort, launching a ministry, changing careers, or stepping out in faith can appear irrational to people who only understand natural logic.

But just because it looks crazy does not mean it is crazy. Sometimes what appears foolish to the world is actually wisdom in the Spirit. It is just a look.

Secondly: It’s Just a Sound

There are times when the sounds coming from your life may confuse others. Praying out loud, speaking affirmations, declaring Scripture, or verbally processing your faith journey can sound unusual to people around you.

To someone listening from the outside, it may seem like you are talking to yourself. But what sounds strange to the natural ear may actually be spiritual alignment.

This is your spirit speaking to your soul, bringing your mind, emotions, and body into divine order.

Consider Peter stepping out of the boat. To the disciples, it sounded irrational. He spoke to what they believed was a ghost and asked to walk on water. Yet Peter was not crazy, he was responding to a divine invitation.

Sometimes you must speak what others cannot yet see. Your declarations may sound unusual to the crowd, but they are often the sound of faith, vision, and movement. It is just a sound.

Thirdly: It’s Just a Feeling

Life brings real pressure, financial stress, broken relationships, health challenges, workplace demands, and family burdens. Under heavy pressure, there may be moments when you feel overwhelmed or as if you are losing control.

But feelings are not permanent facts. Emotions are energy in motion. They rise, they move, and they pass.

Feeling overwhelmed does not mean you have lost your mind. It means you are human and actively processing life’s challenges.

When these waves come, grounding becomes essential. Prayer, journaling, counseling, therapy, trusted community, and moments of stillness can help restore clarity and peace.

Acknowledging emotional heaviness does not validate madness. It simply acknowledges the need for support, healing, and grace. It is just a feeling.

Conclusion

Remaining in your right mind is evidence of divine preservation. Life may create seasons that look chaotic, sound irrational, or feel overwhelming, but none of these define your true identity.

Just as David used the appearance of madness to survive a dangerous environment, you may walk through seasons where your faith looks like foolishness to observers. Yet God continues to preserve your mind.

Declare this over your life: I AM not crazy. I AM preserved. I AM held by God.

Even if you are by yourself, remember this truth:

   1. I AM not alone

   2. I AM not lonely

   3. I AM not abandoned

God is with you, sustaining your mind, strengthening your heart, and preserving your peace.

đŸ“– Reflection: Are you allowing appearances, outside opinions, or temporary emotions to define your identity?

đŸ’¡ Action Step: Speak this affirmation aloud every morning this week: “God has given me power, love, and a sound mind.”

Why Me? God’s Glory (Romans 8:18) Why? That's a question often in our Souls. Why is this happening to me? Why am I having this experience? Why am I facing this health challenge? There's an answer! Why am I having these relationship challenges? There’s an answer, and it’s the same one. Why am I having this financial challenge? There’s an answer! There’s an answer to every question in your Soul, and the answer is glory. The reason for every experience in your life is so that God can get the glory. The purpose of all our challenges is not to bring us down but to transform us and bring glory to God. Why am I having this test, this trial, this tribulation? So God can get the glory. Why am I experiencing this persecution, this headache, this pain? So, God can get the glory. Why am I witnessing this miracle, sign, or wonder? So, God can get the glory. Why am I having this challenge in my local assembly, in my ministry, in my business, and in my organization? The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
