Have You Prayed About It? The Power of Seeking God Before Every Decision

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not lean to your own understanding. In all of your ways, acknowledge God, and God will direct your path." – Proverbs 3:5–6

The spiritual journey through the Book of Joshua provides a powerful lesson about the importance of prayer and discernment. In Joshua chapter nine, the leaders of Israel encountered the Gibeonites, who used deception to secure their protection. Fearful of Israel's advance, they disguised themselves as weary travelers from a distant land, carrying worn-out clothing and stale bread to support their story.

The mistake made by Joshua and the leaders was not their willingness to show kindness. Their error was failing to seek God's guidance before making a covenant. Instead of consulting the Lord, they relied solely upon what they could see, hear, and touch. Their physical senses overruled their spiritual discernment.

This account reminds believers that prayer is far more than speaking to God. Prayer is a sacred conversation where we communicate with God and remain open to hearing divine direction. It includes prayer, meditation, praise, worship, silence, reflection, and every practice that connects the soul to the presence of God.

When people separate life into sacred and secular categories, they often overlook the reality that God cares about every aspect of existence. God is concerned about relationships, finances, health, careers, business opportunities, family matters, and daily decisions. Nothing is too small or insignificant for God's attention.

Firstly: Pray Before Entering a Situation

Before stepping into any new situation, prayer cultivates discernment and protects against deception. Deception often succeeds when individuals become overly confident in their own reasoning, intellect, or perception. Relying exclusively upon human understanding can blind people to motives and circumstances that are not immediately visible.

Acknowledging God allows the Holy Spirit to guide believers into truth. Through prayer, God reveals wisdom that goes beyond appearances and helps individuals recognize what aligns with their highest good and divine purpose.

God cares deeply about every dimension of life, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially, and socially. Whether the concern seems major or minor, bringing it before God creates space for divine insight and direction.

Seeking God at the beginning of a situation often prevents confusion, disappointment, and unnecessary struggle later. Spiritual discernment enables believers to see beyond surface appearances and perceive deeper truths.

Secondly: Pray Before Making a Choice

Life is shaped by the decisions we make every day. Each choice influences the direction of our future and contributes to the overall quality of our lives. For this reason, every significant decision deserves prayerful consideration.

Trust belongs in God rather than in personal ability, public opinion, financial resources, or human systems. While wisdom and planning are important, they are most effective when guided by divine direction.

Praying before making a decision does not require elaborate rituals. Sometimes it is as simple as taking a quiet moment, breathing deeply, becoming still, and inviting God's wisdom into the process. A brief pause can create space for clarity, peace, and insight.

When God becomes the center of life, every decision begins to revolve around divine purpose. Prayer helps individuals move beyond limited understanding and enter into greater wisdom, peace, and confidence.

Thirdly: Pray Before Entering a Covenant or Contract

One of the most practical applications of prayer is seeking God's guidance before entering agreements and commitments. Whether purchasing a home, buying a vehicle, starting a business, signing a contract, joining a church, or entering a marriage covenant, prayer provides an opportunity to evaluate alignment before making a commitment.

Many people focus exclusively on external factors while overlooking spiritual discernment. Yet some of life's greatest blessings and challenges arise from the agreements we make. Prayer helps reveal whether a commitment aligns with God's purpose and direction.

Because God is present in every area of life, there is no true division between the sacred and the secular. Every commitment has spiritual implications. Inviting God into the process allows believers to move forward with greater wisdom and confidence.

God directing the path of a believer through divine guidance

Conclusion

Joshua's experience with the Gibeonites serves as a timeless reminder that good intentions alone are not enough. Even well-meaning decisions can lead to unnecessary complications when God's guidance is not sought first.

Prayer remains one of the greatest safeguards against deception, confusion, and regret. Through consistent communion with God, believers develop greater discernment, wisdom, and confidence in the path ahead.

When we acknowledge God in every situation, every decision, and every covenant, we position ourselves to receive divine direction. As Proverbs promises, God faithfully directs the paths of those who trust wholeheartedly and seek divine guidance above personal understanding.

Before the next conversation, opportunity, commitment, or major decision, ask yourself one simple question: Have you prayed about it?

📖 Reflection: Is there a decision, relationship, opportunity, or commitment in your life right now that needs to be brought before God in prayer?

💡 Action Step: Before making your next significant decision, spend intentional time seeking God's wisdom and direction. Listen for peace, clarity, and alignment before moving forward.

Why Me? God’s Glory (Romans 8:18) Why? That's a question often in our Souls. Why is this happening to me? Why am I having this experience? Why am I facing this health challenge? There's an answer! Why am I having these relationship challenges? There’s an answer, and it’s the same one. Why am I having this financial challenge? There’s an answer! There’s an answer to every question in your Soul, and the answer is glory. The reason for every experience in your life is so that God can get the glory. The purpose of all our challenges is not to bring us down but to transform us and bring glory to God. Why am I having this test, this trial, this tribulation? So God can get the glory. Why am I experiencing this persecution, this headache, this pain? So, God can get the glory. Why am I witnessing this miracle, sign, or wonder? So, God can get the glory. Why am I having this challenge in my local assembly, in my ministry, in my business, and in my organization? The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
