Breaking Down the Lesson: How God Teaches Us Through Every Experience

Breaking Down the Lesson

"Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name." – Psalm 86:11 (KJV)

Psalm 86:11 expresses a heartfelt prayer for divine guidance and instruction. The psalmist asks God to reveal His ways so that life may be lived in truth with a unified heart that honors His name. This prayer reflects a deep desire not only to know God intellectually but to experience His direction personally in the details of everyday life.

Every life experience contains a lesson that God is teaching. When we take time to reflect, pray, and meditate on what the Holy Spirit is revealing, each situation becomes an opportunity for spiritual growth and deeper intimacy with God.

Learning the Lesson in Every Experience

Breaking down the lesson in life’s situations begins with a simple truth: God is always teaching. The Holy Spirit serves as the internal teacher, guiding believers into truth and revealing the specific instruction needed for each circumstance.

God does not operate through generic or repetitive solutions. Instead, He deals in details and personal direction. Through prayer, meditation, stillness, and reflection, believers can discover the unique lesson present in every situation.

Three key questions help uncover what God is teaching through life’s experiences.

1. What Am I to Say in This Situation?

Jesus often spoke words that were given to Him by the Father. In the same way, believers are encouraged to seek God's specific word for each moment. Sometimes this guidance comes as a scripture, a phrase, or an internal prompting by the Holy Spirit.

At times, the answer may be silence. Scripture reminds us to let all the earth keep silence before God. In other situations, God may guide us to speak gently and with grace, remembering that a soft answer turns away wrath.

Seeking God's instruction helps ensure that our words bring life, healing, and wisdom to those who hear them.

2. What Am I to Do in This Situation?

Faith without works is dead, yet the right action varies from one situation to another. Sometimes the Holy Spirit calls us to act boldly, lead, or help someone in need. Other times the instruction may be to stand still and allow God to move on our behalf.

Avoid relying on past patterns or repeating the same responses in every circumstance. True spiritual growth comes from seeking God's present guidance rather than depending solely on past experience.

Acknowledging God in all our ways allows Him to direct our paths with wisdom and clarity.

3. What Am I to Receive From This Experience?

Every life experience contains a blessing waiting to be discovered. Sometimes the gift is tangible, while other times it is a deeper spiritual insight, wisdom, or personal growth.

Approaching situations with an open heart allows us to recognize the treasures hidden within life's challenges. God often uses experiences to deliver blessings that could not be received in any other way.

Conclusion

The prayer of Psalm 86:11 continues to guide believers today: “Teach me thy way, O LORD.” When we intentionally seek God's instruction through life’s experiences, we begin to walk more confidently in His truth.

By asking what to say, what to do, and what to receive from each situation, we open ourselves to deeper intimacy with God and greater sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Every moment becomes an opportunity for divine teaching, transformation, and spiritual growth.

📖 Reflection: What recent experience in your life might contain a lesson that God is trying to teach you?

💡 Action Step: Spend time in prayer and reflection this week asking God the three questions from this lesson. Write down the guidance you receive.

Why Me? God’s Glory (Romans 8:18) Why? That's a question often in our Souls. Why is this happening to me? Why am I having this experience? Why am I facing this health challenge? There's an answer! Why am I having these relationship challenges? There’s an answer, and it’s the same one. Why am I having this financial challenge? There’s an answer! There’s an answer to every question in your Soul, and the answer is glory. The reason for every experience in your life is so that God can get the glory. The purpose of all our challenges is not to bring us down but to transform us and bring glory to God. Why am I having this test, this trial, this tribulation? So God can get the glory. Why am I experiencing this persecution, this headache, this pain? So, God can get the glory. Why am I witnessing this miracle, sign, or wonder? So, God can get the glory. Why am I having this challenge in my local assembly, in my ministry, in my business, and in my organization? So God can get the...
The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
