A Growing Appetite: Moving from Milk to Meat in Spiritual Growth
"I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able." – 1 Corinthians 3:2
Spiritual growth requires proper nourishment. In 1 Corinthians 3:2, Paul writes to the church at Corinth explaining that he fed them with milk instead of meat because they were not yet able to handle deeper teaching. Paul's desire was for the church to grow spiritually and mature in their understanding of God.
Just as natural life develops from childhood to adulthood, spiritual life also grows in stages. It is not healthy to remain a spiritual child forever. God calls believers to grow from being children of God, to adolescents in God, and ultimately to mature adults in God. This development reflects the growth of the Christ within each person.
Spiritual maturity is often revealed by one's appetite. What a person desires to consume spiritually reveals where they are in their development. As believers grow, their Thinking (thoughts), Theology (words), and Treatment (actions) begin to transform according to the Word of God.
Firstly: Children Need Milk. The childhood phase of spiritual development is characterized by drinking milk. In this stage, believers are learning the basic principles of faith. The teachings remain simple and foundational because deeper truths may be difficult to digest.
Believers in this phase often stay within the elementary teachings of scripture and may interpret passages only at the literal level. Personal study may be limited, and spiritual nourishment is often received primarily through pastors, teachers, or corporate gatherings. The Christ within is still developing its appetite.
Secondly: Adolescents Need Meat. As believers grow, they begin to crave more substantial spiritual nourishment. Meat represents the deeper truths of scripture and the movement beyond literal interpretation into life application.
At this stage, individuals begin feeding themselves through reading, studying, and researching the Word of God. Meat requires chewing, it requires thought, reflection, and deeper investigation. The Holy Spirit begins illuminating the scriptures, providing insight and personal revelation.
Thirdly: Adults Make Meals. Spiritual adulthood is reached when believers not only feed themselves but also begin feeding others. Mature believers develop the ability to prepare spiritual meals studying the Word deeply, discerning what others need, and sharing wisdom with those who are still growing.
Just as a cook plans, prepares, and serves meals, mature believers learn to study, interpret, and apply scripture in ways that nourish the spiritual lives of others. They understand when someone needs milk and when someone is ready for meat. In this way, the Christ within them becomes fully expressed in service and teaching.
Conclusion. Paul desired to feed the church with meat, but they were not ready, so he provided milk. Each believer must ask themselves an important question: How developed is the Christ within?
Is the Christ within still a child drinking milk? An adolescent learning to eat meat? Or an adult capable of preparing meals for others? True spiritual growth transforms our Thinking, Theology, and Treatment so that our lives align with the higher purposes of God.
As believers continue growing in Christ, they develop the capacity to nourish others and live out the Word in ways that bring abundant and eternal life.
