Humanity or Divinity: Living the Nature of God's Love
"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." – 1 John 4:8
The words of 1 John 4:8 form a powerful foundation for understanding the distinction between human nature and divine nature. At the heart of this difference lies one central truth, love is the essential characteristic of divinity. Human nature, born of the earth, reflects the physical and limited aspects of existence. Divine nature, however, comes from the Father above and transcends all limits through the power of love.
Firstly, human nature allows a person to love some people, while divine nature empowers a person to love all people. It is natural to love only those who show love in return, but divine love extends even to those who oppose, criticize, or harm. This unconditional love reflects the heart of God limitless, unchanging, and ever-reaching beyond human boundaries.
Secondly, human love is often occasional and dependent on circumstances, whereas divine love is constant and unconditional. The fruit of the Spirit demonstrates this divine consistency: love sustains joy, peace, patience, gentleness, and goodness. True spiritual maturity is revealed when love remains steadfast, even in moments of hardship, misunderstanding, or pain. This is the divine capacity to love as God loves, unchanging and eternal.
Thirdly, human nature perceives God in some things, but divine nature perceives God in all things. In our humanity, we often recognize God only in blessings or pleasant circumstances. Yet divine perception sees God even in trials, confusion, or suffering, trusting that “all things work together for good to those who love God.” This higher vision flows from divine understanding and faith that transcends appearances.
In conclusion, the call of every believer is to rise above the limitations of human nature and walk in divine nature to love all people, love consistently, and see God in everything. Living this way reflects the very nature of God, who is love. It is through this divine nature that our lives become radiant with light, allowing others to perceive God's glory through our actions and attitudes. To live in divine love is to awaken to the fullness of Christ within and to experience the abundant life He promised.
📖 Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to love unconditionally, and how can you invite God’s divine nature to transform that?
💡 Action Step: Practice divine love today by showing kindness to someone who may not return it, and recognize God’s presence in every situation.
