Words of Wisdom for Better Living (Ephesians 5:15–18)
"Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise," Ephesians 5:15 (KSB)
The Apostle Paul, in Ephesians 5, gives us timeless words of wisdom for better living. Following the model of Solomon, one of the wisest men in Scripture, and Jesus, our divine Teacher, Paul offers principles that help us live with wisdom, purpose, and balance. His message is as relevant today as it was to the church in Ephesus. Who doesn’t desire to live a better life? Who doesn’t long to become their best self? Let us affirm together: I desire to live my best life. My life is getting better and better every day and in every way.
1. Maximize Opportunities (Ephesians 5:16)
Paul reminds us to make the most of every opportunity. God is always opening doors and creating new pathways for growth and blessing. Your gift will make room for you and bring you before great people. When you see every challenge as a divine opportunity, you shift your perspective from crisis to possibility. Remember, even in difficulty, God is creating space for your highest good.
2. Know God’s Will (Ephesians 5:17)
Many wrestle with the question: What is God’s will for my life? Scripture assures us that God’s will is always good. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11). When we live in gratitude and trust, we begin to recognize God’s blessings instead of resisting them. Even what others meant for harm, God can turn into good (Genesis 50:20). His will for you is absolute good.
3. Practice Moderation (Ephesians 5:18)
Paul cautions: “Do not get drunk on wine…but be filled with the Spirit.” Moderation is wisdom. Each of us must discern what is life-giving and what is harmful. Some things we must avoid entirely because of their destructive effects. Others require balance and self-control. The Spirit of God will guide us into that balance, showing us what strengthens our soul and what weakens it.
Paul’s words invite us to walk wisely, embracing opportunities, trusting God’s good will, and living in Spirit-led balance. These principles lead to true fulfillment and spiritual growth.
