What’s on Your Shoulders and Who Put It There?

Jordan River crossing symbolizing divine order and purpose

"Joshua told them, ‘Go across the Jordan River ahead of the ark of the Lord your God. Every one of you must pick up one stone from the spot where your feet first touch the water. There must be as many stones as there are tribes.’" – Joshua 4:5

What’s on your shoulders and who put it there? Are you carrying a burden that was never assigned by divine order? When a responsibility feels heavy, draining, and overwhelming, it may not have originated from the Divine.

Jesus reminds us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. While responsibilities and duties are part of life, when they come from divine calling, they are accompanied by grace, energy, anointing, and strength. Divine assignments never arrive alone they bring provision with them.

Carrying loads not placed on your shoulders by divine order leads to burnout, stress, frustration, and a desire to give up. Yet those aligned with divine purpose renew their strength. They mount up with wings like eagles, run without weariness, and walk without fainting. There is endless energy for what is divinely assigned, but not for what is not.

First: Was it placed there by Divine order? In the book of Joshua, the priests crossed the Jordan, and one representative from each tribe was divinely selected to carry a stone from the riverbed. The instruction was clear, the purpose was defined, and the strength to lift the stone was supplied. When God assigns a load, grace provides the power, timing, and support to carry it without exhaustion.

Second: Was it placed there by other people? A family member, friend, neighbor, coworker, classmate, teacher, or supervisor may have placed expectations on your shoulders. These burdens often arise from pressure, obligation, or fear of disappointing others. When we struggle to say no, ask for help, or explore alternative paths, we may take on loads that drain our energy because they lack divine anointing.

Third: Did you place it there yourself? Self-imposed burdens often come from comparison trying to match what others are carrying or proving worthiness through effort. This pressure overlooks personal divine purpose and leads to imbalance, fatigue, and unnecessary stress when heavenly direction is absent.

Anything not placed on your shoulders by divine order is meant to be released. Divine desire is for a holistic, healthy, balanced, and well-rounded life happy, prosperous, successful, and filled with love. Optimal health begins with discerning what belongs on your shoulders and what does not.

In Joshua’s story, twelve representatives carried stones from the Jordan as a memorial. They bore the weight because divine instruction assigned it. Divine assignments always include guidance where to lift the burden, how long to carry it, when to release it, and when to pass it on.

Examine every burden today. Discern its source. Release what divine order did not assign. Embrace what aligns with your purpose, and step into renewed strength, abundant life, and the light yoke that brings freedom and joy.

Who Put That on Your Shoulders? (Joshua 4:5)
   1. God
   2. You
   3. Other People

📖 Reflection: Which responsibilities in your life feel heavy—and can you discern whether they were divinely assigned or self-imposed?

💡 Action Step: Prayerfully release one burden today that did not come from divine order, and affirm your alignment with purpose and grace.

Refocus Your Faith: How to Overcome Distraction, Disappointment, and Discouragement

Refocus Your Faith: How to Overcome Distraction, Disappointment, and Discouragement "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."   Galatians 5:6 (KSB)    With everything going on around us, it's easy to feel lost. Distractions come quickly, disappointments pile up, and discouragement sneaks in. We all face these moments. But even when we get off track, there is a way back and that path is through our faith, principles, and core values.  When you live your life anchored in principles, it gives you a compass for when the road gets unclear. Knowing your vision, your mission, and your core values makes it easier to realign when life feels out of control. But if you don’t know who you are, how can you get back to being your best self? If you don’t know what you stand on, what can you stand up on after a fall?    Clarity of purpose keeps you ...

Universe Means One Thing: Love

Universe Means One Thing: Love "For all the law is fulfilled in this one word, love: Love your neighbor as yourself."   Galatians 5:14 (KSB)    Sometimes, the word “universe” can feel mysterious even spooky to some. Others think it's irreverent or sacrilegious when used in spiritual conversations. But what if we redefined it? What if “universe” simply meant love? What if it meant God, since God is love?  When we say, “the universe,” we can think of it as pointing to one word love. Just one word. The entire Bible, composed of 66 books and written by over 40 different authors, ultimately speaks to one central theme: love. From beginning to end, this divine book points us toward loving God, loving ourselves, and loving others.  In the Old Testament, God's people had 636 laws civil, ceremonial, and moral. They guided everything from relationships to religious festivals. But then Jesus came and said, “Let me make this simple Love God. Love yourself. L...

Hidden Treasure: You Are a Vessel, Not Just an Instrument

I AM Not an Instrument. I AM a Vessel “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KSB) Hidden in Plain Sight The image that Paul presents in 2 Corinthians 4 is that of a treasure hidden within an earthen vessel. In the Old Testament, people didn’t have locks, alarm systems, or cameras to protect their valuables. Instead, their belongings were often left exposed, making them vulnerable to thieves and robbers. To safeguard their most valuable treasures, they would hide them in jars of clay—earthen vessels—placing them in plain sight. A thief or robber would never think to look there because it wasn’t an obvious hiding place. Likewise, God has placed something valuable inside of you—a treasure of great worth. Yet, people often fail to see it. You may be right in front of them, but they don’t recognize your gifts, skills, talents, anointing, abilities, or sensitivities. You are hidden in plain sight bec...
