Name Him Wonderful: From Image to Likeness

Name Him Wonderful (Psalm 139:6–14)

Fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God Psalm 139

"Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it… I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." – Psalm 139:6, 14

We begin a series exploring the question: What is in a name? This journey is rooted in Isaiah 9:6, where the prophecy declares that the child to be born shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These names reveal nature, authority, character, and power.

The name Wonderful signifies something awesome, amazing, excellent, outstanding, superior mind-blowing and breathtaking. It points to the highest level of consciousness attainable, an evolution that involves growth, development, unfolding, progression, and process.

To understand wonderful, we must return to creation itself, as affirmed in Psalm 139. Wonderful is not an instant designation; it is a progression.

Firstly: All Creation Begins as Good

In the Genesis creation account, each day from the first through the fifth concludes with the declaration, “and it was good.” The firmament, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, birds, and animals are all called good. These include wonders that inspire awe sunsets, eclipses, peacocks, lions.

Yet none of these are called wonderful. They are good. This establishes an important foundation: all creation stands at least as good by virtue of being created.

Secondly: Humanity Is Declared Very Good

On the sixth day, creation reaches a new level. Humanity alone is declared very good because humanity alone is made in the image of God. This image grants a capacity beyond stars, flowers, or even angels the capacity for divine potential.

Very good does not come from talent, education, appearance, finances, race, gender, family, or background. It comes solely from being made in the image of God. This truth deserves daily affirmation: “I am very good because I am made in the image of God.”

Speaking negatively about oneself reflects negatively on God, for humanity mirrors the Divine Creator. Creation is good because it is created. Humanity is very good because it is made in the image of God.

   Thirdly: Wonderful Emerges Through Likeness

Yet wonderful goes beyond very good. Good is not enough. Very good is not the final destination. Wonderful requires manifestation.

Image represents resting potential. It makes every human being very good. Likeness, however, activates that potential. Likeness is expression, demonstration, and fruition.

Birds possess goodness, but no likeness. Humans possess image, making them very good. Wonderful distinguishes itself when likeness is lived when people think God’s thoughts, speak God’s words, and perform God’s actions.

Thinking God’s thoughts transforms consciousness. Speaking God’s words brings theology into daily conversation. Performing God’s actions turns belief into visible love. Potential alone remains very good; expressed potential becomes wonderful.

Jesus embodied this fully. He did not merely carry the potential to heal, He healed. He did not simply have the capacity to raise the dead, He demonstrated it. Potential actualized elevates life from very good to wonderful.

This is why we name the Divine Wonderful. When others encounter you and sense divine presence, hear divine wisdom, and witness divine love in action, wonderful is no longer abstract it is visible.

   Conclusion

Wonderful is not a distant title reserved for a select few; it is a lived reality available to all who move from image to likeness. When thoughts align with divine wisdom, words carry divine truth, and actions reflect divine love, the name Wonderful becomes tangible in everyday life.

The journey from good, to very good, to wonderful is not about earning worth. It is about allowing the divine image already placed within to become likeness in practice.

May each person rise each day, look in the mirror, and declare: “I am very good because I am made in the image of God, and I choose to walk in the likeness of God.” In that choice, the name Wonderful is not only spoken over Jesus, it is lived through every person who dares to actualize their divine potential.

📖 Reflection: In what area of your life is God inviting you to move from potential into visible expression?

💡 Action Step: Choose one thought, one word, or one action today that consciously reflects God’s likeness through you.

Why Me? God’s Glory (Romans 8:18) Why? That's a question often in our Souls. Why is this happening to me? Why am I having this experience? Why am I facing this health challenge? There's an answer! Why am I having these relationship challenges? There’s an answer, and it’s the same one. Why am I having this financial challenge? There’s an answer! There’s an answer to every question in your Soul, and the answer is glory. The reason for every experience in your life is so that God can get the glory. The purpose of all our challenges is not to bring us down but to transform us and bring glory to God. Why am I having this test, this trial, this tribulation? So God can get the glory. Why am I experiencing this persecution, this headache, this pain? So, God can get the glory. Why am I witnessing this miracle, sign, or wonder? So, God can get the glory. Why am I having this challenge in my local assembly, in my ministry, in my business, and in my organization? The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
