It’s Not a Bill: Understanding Cheerful, Free, and Liberal Giving

It’s Not a Bill!

Cheerful giving as an act of worship, not obligation

(2 Corinthians 9:6–11)

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also harvest sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also harvest generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work…" – 2 Corinthians 9:6–11

Tithing is not a bill. A bill demands payment regardless of attitude, with penalties attached for nonpayment disconnection of services, repossession, or loss. Bill collectors are indifferent to how the money is obtained or how the payer feels, as long as payment is received. Giving tithes and offerings, however, flows from the heart. It is an expression of worship, relationship, and trust in the Divine. God values not only what we give, but how we give the attitude, spirit, intention, and love behind the act. Tithing honors God first in time, talent, and treasure. It is a blessing, not an obligation.

   Firstly: Give Cheerfully

“God loves a cheerful giver.” Cheerfulness describes the manner of giving. When giving is reduced to duty or pressure, the flow of blessing can become restricted. Giving is not a payment to keep church lights on, maintain air conditioning, or support leadership. Provision follows divine vision.

Cheerful giving aligns thoughts, words, and actions with the divine mind of unity and abundance. This alignment releases spiritual energy and magnetism that draws blessing from every direction. When joy accompanies generosity, the harvest is activated.

   Secondly: Give Freely

Giving must also be free without manipulation, expectation, or strings attached. Free giving releases the seed completely. Expectations of recognition, repayment, gratitude, or control place restrictions on the gift and prevent it from taking root.

Freely giving opens the door to freely receiving, reflecting divine generosity itself: “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Free giving brings freedom, freedom from outcomes, reactions, and responses. Gratitude arises simply from being in a position to give.

   Thirdly: Give Liberally

Giving is also liberal. The tithe represents a foundation, ten percent symbolizing giving all as God adds the zero. Liberal giving moves beyond obligation into trust, acknowledging God as the true source and supplier of every need.

Liberal generosity signals readiness for abundance. It breaks cycles of lack, scarcity, and poverty thinking. Faithfulness in small things leads to stewardship over much. When resources feel limited, sowing becomes even more powerful. Prosperity is inseparably connected to giving time, talent, and treasure rooted in thanksgiving and forgiveness.

   Conclusion

Tithing is not a bill because God cares about the heart. Give cheerfully, freely, and liberally just as you have decided within yourself without reluctance or compulsion. When thinking, theology, and treatment align, prosperity follows. There is no true prosperity without giving.

📖 Reflection: In what ways can your giving become more joyful, free, and faith-filled rather than routine or pressured?

💡 Action Step: This week, give intentionally—whether time, talent, or treasure—with cheerfulness and gratitude, releasing all expectations and trusting God as your source.

Why Me? God’s Glory (Romans 8:18) Why? That's a question often in our Souls. Why is this happening to me? Why am I having this experience? Why am I facing this health challenge? There's an answer! Why am I having these relationship challenges? There’s an answer, and it’s the same one. Why am I having this financial challenge? There’s an answer! There’s an answer to every question in your Soul, and the answer is glory. The reason for every experience in your life is so that God can get the glory. The purpose of all our challenges is not to bring us down but to transform us and bring glory to God. Why am I having this test, this trial, this tribulation? So God can get the glory. Why am I experiencing this persecution, this headache, this pain? So, God can get the glory. Why am I witnessing this miracle, sign, or wonder? So, God can get the glory. Why am I having this challenge in my local assembly, in my ministry, in my business, and in my organization? So God can get the...
The Sacred Sunday Posture:  Kneeling “ A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees; if you are willing, you can make me clean (Mark 1:40).” In addition to bowing your heads and closing your eyes, many people learn to “get on your knees and pray.” Often, it’s at night before going to sleep. Parents instruct their children to kneel on the side of the bed and say their prayers. Perhaps you have fond memories of kneeling and reciting the Lord’s Prayer or the 23 rd Psalm. Or maybe you were taught, like me, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake. I pray the Lord, my soul, to take. God bless mommy, daddy...” Kneeling is a physical way to revere God as your Creator and remember that God is your Source. “Know that it is the Lord, who is God. It is he that has made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture (Psalm 100:3).” Without reverencing and ...

Where Is the Love? Learning to Recognize God's Presence Through Galatians 5

Where Is the Love?    One of my favorite duets is by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack: "Where Is the Love?" It asks, "Where is the love that you said you would give to me?" It's a timeless question and one that’s just as spiritually relevant today.    In Galatians 5 , Paul writes to the churches in Galatia about the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. He helps believers understand how to discern what’s truly of God. And here's the spiritual compass: love is God's signature . "And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."   Galatians 5:21 (KSB)    Whatever you do whether it’s cooking a meal or making a major decision ask yourself: "Where is the love?" Is love your motive? Is love present in your tone, your actions, your intentions?  Paul’s letter urges us to determine whether we are operati...
