I Am More Than My Body: Understanding Our Divine Identity
"Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: Jesus appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory." – 1 Timothy 3:16 (KSB)
This powerful passage reveals the divine nature of Jesus as both fully human and fully spiritual, serving as a pattern for understanding our own existence from a kingdom perspective grounded in divinity. The Apostle Paul instructs Timothy by detailing the life cycle of Jesus to help believers appreciate their identity beyond the physical body.
Before the Body: Jesus existed as the Word of God, emphasizing that all humans, like Jesus, begin as spiritual beings and ideas in the mind of God. We existed before our physical bodies came into being and continue to exist as spiritual beings under divine laws of love and eternal principles. Our bodies are merely vessels temporary homes through which our spiritual selves fulfill divine purpose on earth.
In the Body: While we live in our physical form, we recognize our bodies as temples where God dwells. We are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and it is vital to care for every part of this sacred house our rest, nourishment, exercise, and health. Honoring our physical bodies is a way of honoring God’s presence within us. Stewardship of our health supports our spiritual growth and readiness to serve.
After the Body: Physical death is not the end but a transition. As God formed humanity from dust and breathed His life into us, our physical form will return to the earth, yet our spiritual essence persists. Believers who follow Jesus’ example can expect resurrection into a glorified body, a continuation of life in a higher form. Death, therefore, is not a finality but a gateway to eternal life, the promise of a new beginning in glory.
In Conclusion: Understanding these three phases before, in, and after the body helps us align our identity with divine truth. We are not merely physical beings; we are eternal spirits living in temporary temples for a higher purpose. Following Jesus, our divine example, allows us to live in awareness of our eternal nature: pre-existence, physical life, and continued life beyond the physical. This awareness nurtures abundant living today and hope for eternal glory.
