What Is It: Wants, Needs, and Desires in Philippians 4:19

What Is It? (Philippians 4:19)

"But my God will supply all your needs according to God’s riches in glory through Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:19 KSB

Philippians chapter 4 contains some of the most well-known promises in Scripture, and one of the most quoted is: “But my God shall supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” This powerful verse reminds us that God is faithful to meet our needs, but it also invites us to discern between wants, needs, and desires.

1. Wants

The lowest level of consciousness is want. Wants come from the ego, the flesh, the lesser version of ourselves. They are fueled by comparison, jealousy, envy, and strife. Wanting is always focused on pulling something external into our lives so we can feel complete, yet wants never satisfy. As soon as one want is met, another quickly takes its place. This is why Psalm 23 declares: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.” God never promised to give us everything we want, because wants are insatiable and fleeting. Instead, He calls us higher.

2. Needs

God did promise to provide for our needs. Needs are essential for life-food, clothing, shelter, air, and water. Beyond the physical, we also have emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. Psychologists like Maslow describe these in levels: safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. But even before psychology, Scripture declared that God meets every one of them.

Jesus said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” If God cares for the sparrows and the lilies, He will surely care for you. When we pray for our needs, we acknowledge God as our source and provider.

3. Desires

Beyond wants and needs lies something greater: desire. Desire is not about ego or survival, it is the whisper of God’s Spirit within us, calling us higher. Psalm 37:4 promises, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” True desires come from the Christ-mind, the higher consciousness, and align with God’s will.

Desires are not about grasping, but about flowing with God’s purpose. As you draw closer to Him, desires begin to manifest with ease. You no longer strive, beg, or manipulate. Instead, you rest in His presence, and your life unfolds according to His divine design.

What Is It?

1. Wants – Temporary cravings from the lower self.

2. Needs – Promises from God’s provision.

3. Desires – God-given callings that align with His will.

So, ask yourself: when you pray, what is it? Is it a want? A need? Or is it a desire born from the Spirit? The closer you walk with God, the more you will discover that your true desires reflect His heart, and He will fulfill them in ways beyond your imagination.

📖 Reflection: When you pray, are you asking from a place of want, need, or true God-given desire?

💡 Action Step: Spend time in prayer this week discerning whether your requests are wants, needs, or desires, and align them with God’s Word and promises.

Universe Means One Thing: Love

Universe Means One Thing: Love "For all the law is fulfilled in this one word, love: Love your neighbor as yourself."   Galatians 5:14 (KSB)    Sometimes, the word “universe” can feel mysterious even spooky to some. Others think it's irreverent or sacrilegious when used in spiritual conversations. But what if we redefined it? What if “universe” simply meant love? What if it meant God, since God is love?  When we say, “the universe,” we can think of it as pointing to one word love. Just one word. The entire Bible, composed of 66 books and written by over 40 different authors, ultimately speaks to one central theme: love. From beginning to end, this divine book points us toward loving God, loving ourselves, and loving others.  In the Old Testament, God's people had 636 laws civil, ceremonial, and moral. They guided everything from relationships to religious festivals. But then Jesus came and said, “Let me make this simple Love God. Love yourself. L...

Refocus Your Faith: How to Overcome Distraction, Disappointment, and Discouragement

Refocus Your Faith: How to Overcome Distraction, Disappointment, and Discouragement "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."   Galatians 5:6 (KSB)    With everything going on around us, it's easy to feel lost. Distractions come quickly, disappointments pile up, and discouragement sneaks in. We all face these moments. But even when we get off track, there is a way back and that path is through our faith, principles, and core values.  When you live your life anchored in principles, it gives you a compass for when the road gets unclear. Knowing your vision, your mission, and your core values makes it easier to realign when life feels out of control. But if you don’t know who you are, how can you get back to being your best self? If you don’t know what you stand on, what can you stand up on after a fall?    Clarity of purpose keeps you ...

Hidden Treasure: You Are a Vessel, Not Just an Instrument

I AM Not an Instrument. I AM a Vessel “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KSB) Hidden in Plain Sight The image that Paul presents in 2 Corinthians 4 is that of a treasure hidden within an earthen vessel. In the Old Testament, people didn’t have locks, alarm systems, or cameras to protect their valuables. Instead, their belongings were often left exposed, making them vulnerable to thieves and robbers. To safeguard their most valuable treasures, they would hide them in jars of clay—earthen vessels—placing them in plain sight. A thief or robber would never think to look there because it wasn’t an obvious hiding place. Likewise, God has placed something valuable inside of you—a treasure of great worth. Yet, people often fail to see it. You may be right in front of them, but they don’t recognize your gifts, skills, talents, anointing, abilities, or sensitivities. You are hidden in plain sight bec...
