The Vocational Advantage: Living Worthy of Your Calling
"I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beg you to walk worthy of the vocation by which you are called." Ephesians 4:1 (KSB)
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:1 that our calling, our vocation is something far greater than just a job or even a career. A job is something you do to earn a paycheck. A career may reflect your education, skills, and achievements, but it does not necessarily bring fulfillment. A vocation, however, is a divine calling your God-given purpose and living it out changes everything. I know this firsthand. I once climbed the career ladder: volunteer, intern, part-time counselor, part-time teacher, full-time counselor, director of counseling, school psychologist, and eventually assistant principal of a high school. It was respectable work, but it didn’t fill my soul. At 44, I retired from my career and stepped fully into my vocation full-time ministry. My calling is to preach, teach, write, develop people, and lead Kingdom initiatives. And here’s the beautiful part: I never need a vacation from it because it brings me deep, internal fulfillment.
You see, you may need a vacation from your job or even your career, but never from your vocation. Your vocation is not just what you do, it’s who you are. It renews your strength and fuels your energy. As Isaiah declares, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..." (Isaiah 40:31). When you operate in your God-given purpose, you are simply being yourself, and that brings a joy no job title can match. Your vocation not only fulfills you, but it also blesses others. When you walk in your purpose, people around you are positively impacted. Your example gives them permission to discover their own calling. This is why you came into the world, why God designed you uniquely, and why He prepared works for you before creation itself.
And here’s another truth: your vocation opens doors to abundance. It creates multiple streams of increase, opportunities, resources, and relationships that flow from doing the one thing God created you to do. For me, ministry has opened doors to preaching, teaching, writing, creating resources, and leading initiatives all bringing both spiritual and practical provision. When you live in your purpose, you will never lack. So, what is your vocation? What has God placed inside you that brings life to you and those around you? Remember, your vocation will energize you, fulfill you, and make a lasting impact.
