Prayer Tool: Thanksgiving, Praise, and Worship – Putty Knife

Putty is a soft, malleable, grayish- yellow paste that hardens after a few hours. It is mostly used for sealing glass panes in wooden window frames and can be used to cover gaps in flooring and to seal pipes in plumbing jobs. A putty knife is a metal spatula used to mix, apply, and smooth putty.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all of your ways, acknowledge God, and God will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).” Acknowledging God is the putty that holds your life together. The root of thanksgiving, praise, and worship is acknowledging God. Our spiritual practices of thanksgiving, praise, and worship are varying degrees of your acknowledgment of God.

“In all things give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (I Thessalonians 5:18).” Thanksgiving is like mixing putty. Amidst the things that are going on in your life, mix in thanksgiving to acknowledge God for what God has done for you. The more you focus on what you are thankful for, the better you feel about yourself and your life.

“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD (Psalms 150:6).” Praise is applying putty to your life. Beyond being appreciative for good in your life, praise acknowledges God as the Source from which all your blessings (apparent good) and lessons (good yet discovered) flow. Praise applies to your life the idea that God is the Source and that everyone and everything else is a resource through which God flows.

“God is Spirit, and they that worship God must worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).” Worship is smoothing the putty in the cracks and crevices of your life and sealing your Divine identity deep into your consciousness. Worship demonstrates your knowledge of your connection to God, the Truth that your connection to God is eternal, and that nothing can ever separate you from God (Romans 8:35-39).
